Thornton Winery 2010 Jazz Series Announced

The line-up for the 2010 Champagne Jazz Series at Thornton Winery has been announced. The series consists of 21 jazz concerts, Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons from April through October. Headliners include Dave Koz, The Rippingtons, Fourplay, Richard Elliot, Peter White, Rick Braun, and more.

We left North County about 45 minutes later than I’d hoped for. The rain had been falling all day, and I was starting to get worried we weren’t going to make it to downtown in time. As we rolled into 11th St, the traffic was surprisingly light, so I took the Ash St. exit and headed two blocks toward Symphony Hall. As expected, pretty much all free street parking around the venue was taken up, but a paid parking lot directly adjacent to the building had plenty of spaces, and given my wife was wearing some new, not-yet-broken-in high-heels, I opted to pay for the convenience this time around.

After a quick bite at the pizza place across the street, we made our way into into the lobby of symphony hall. What a gorgeous venue! Our seats were fantastic, down in front, just left of center. When the show started, Santa came down through the aisles and read a funny little “Night before Christmas” poem about the Smooth Jazz artists. The music starts and Dave Koz takes the stage. The lighting was great and really set the mood.

The artists played many Christmas songs from Dave Koz’s Christmas album, as well as many of their personal chart-toppers. Besides being a bit crowded (from being virtually sold out), the music was great, the vibes were positive and fun, and the people were cheerful. Can’t wait for next year’s show!

A Smooth Jazz Christmas

A Smooth Jazz Christmas that is! Along with Dave Koz comes trumpeter Rick Braun, pianist David Benoit, vocalist Brenda Russell, and guitarist Peter White.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday, October 7th at JazzConcerts.com, and are available to the public on Friday, October 9th.

Last year during the holidays, we had the pleasure of having Peter White, Mindi Abair and Rick Braun at Sprekels Theatre for a very entertaining and personal Christmas concert. This year’s holiday show is sure to be a hit with Dave Koz as the host of the show at the Copley Sympony Hall in downtown San Diego.

Dave Koz’s Wine helps Kids

Dave Koz has introduced his new label of Napa Valley wines, appropriately named “koz”. The line-up includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Sauvignon Blanc, and a “Red Alto” blend. They are moderately priced, and all proceeds are being donated to the Starlight Children’s Foundation, which helps seriously ill children and their families.

The wines are being sold exclusively through Whole Foods markets in California, Nevada and Arizona.

New Saxophonist Phillip ‘Doc’ Martin to debut ‘Realization’

This week JazzTrax debuts yet another new 2009 Artist. He’s actually on his 3rd set, but as Saxophonist Phillip ‘Doc’ Martin joins Art Good in the JazzTrax Studio this weekend, He’s likely to finally hit it from coast to coast with his new ‘Realization’ CD. He was college acquaintances with Eric Darius in neighboring colleges in Florida and why Doc in the middle of his name? He’s a dentist in The D.C. suburb of Silver Springs, Maryland. Full time dentist and full time musician. He’s a first time JazzTrax guest just before he brings his live show to Catalina Island for the first time.

Keyboardist Oli Silk is also on the show this weekend after spending the summer as a house guest of fellow Brit, Peter White in Los Angeles. Just before Oli comes to Catalina Island where he had his U.S. debut in 2006.

Norman Brown comes to Thornton Winery on Sunday, Septemer 26th for “A Tribute to Wayman Tisdale”. Accompanying Norman Brown will be saxophonist Eric Darius and volcalist Gail Johnson.

The show starts at 5pm, but get there early and enjoy wine tasting and food from the accredited Thornton Winery cafe.
